The Dragon Is Real

Brian Sirin April 21, 2021

I’m not one to scare easy. In fact, I like to think I seek the difficult and intimidating and do my best to keep myself out of my comfort zone. With that said… this upcoming venture has caused some nervousness.

Change is exciting, necessary.. and a master of disguise. Sometimes change looks like fear and uncertainty and if you don’t face it head on, you allow the possibility for both to be true.

I’m currently reading a book (12 Rules To Live By) which referenced a different book (There’s No Such thing As A Dragon) which reminded me of a quote, “If you have to fight a dragon, you should go to it’s lair before it comes to your village.”

We’ve been pretty open about our plans while also being secretive about it to certain crowds. We are now at a point where we’re ready to share it with everybody and the feedback is beginning to roll in. We’ve been receiving a lot of support and just as many questions. One phrase that we see or hear in almost every interaction is some version of.. “I wish we could do that.” or “I would if I could”. My response has been, well you can.. so why don’t you?

Fear and anxiety of the unknown.. that’s really what it comes down to… and I get it. We’d be lying if we told you this isn’t scary. Nothing about this venture is guaranteed.. nothing. We are taking a major risk here. We’ve sold our home, our cars, and both Kelsey and I are leaving jobs we’ve been at for 9+ years. This change or the reality of our decision is becoming very very real.

This change could fail to meet our expectations. Our ambulance could surprise us with mechanical issues. We could end up stranded in the middle of nowhere. We could be injured. We could find ourselves in a bad financial position. All of these things are possibilities. In fact, if we don’t continue and move forward, we allow them to be true and not only in imagination. The only way to eliminate fear is to confront it head on. Only then does it crumble and leave you with reality. Sometimes even that reality is worth fearing but at least now you know for certain and you can prepare to deal with it accordingly.

The dragon DOES exist and it’s breathing fire in your direction. Hiding from it and retreating to safety is tempting.. but doing so will not slay the dragon and it gets bigger every day.

“If you have to fight a dragon, you should go to it’s lair before it comes to your village.”

Which dragons will you slay today?
